Dear Mom and Dad,
I am currently in my apartment on the beach in Nice, France. As I am sure you've seen in the news recently, the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack took place at 10 Rue Nicolas-Appert Paris, France. Thankfully, I am not in Paris but my apartment is 8.2 kilometers away, and I am safe and unharmed. On January 7th, at 11:30 AM two gunmen broke into the Charlie Hebdo offices and shot 10 memebers of the staff of the magazine. This mass murder was all caused by some comics that the magazine released depicting Mohamed in derogatory ways. I feel that although the cartoons were a little stereotypical and rude, that is no reason whatsoever to take the life's of ten innocent people. Especially because France prides itself on freedom of speech, and the Charlie Hebdo magazine is legally allowed speak their honest views on political matters. It is just not worth ten talented writers and artists lives over a religious disagreement over a cartoon. I am so grateful that I was not caught in the middle of this chaos. I just wanted to let you know that I am nowhere near the damage, and there is no reason for you to worry. Hope you're doing well in California.
Love,
Alana
